In 1948, after Janet completed grade 6, the family relocated to a farm in Killarney, Manitoba. Unfortunately, the Neelin School was one student short of the required number to stay open. So - to allow the school to remain open, Janet lived with her Aunt Maggie and continued attending school in Neelin until finishing grade 11. Janet attended Nursing School at Winnipeg General Hospital and graduated in the class of 1958 becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked for one year at Winnipeg Children's Hospital, then joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Nurse and was stationed just west of Victoria BC at Esquimalt Naval Base. While she was stationed there one of Janet's roommates encouraged her to go meet the visiting American sailors. This chance meeting is where she met the love of her life, James G. Carter, an officer in the US Navy. They married September 9, 1961 on Janet's family farm in Killarney. After a short stay in Pearl Harbor, they settled in Seattle, WA. Their marriage would last for over 58 years until Jim's passing in January 2019. Janet was a devoted wife and mother dedicating herself to her marriage and children. Janet's love for children also led her to work part time at a daycare for many years. Janet and Jim created a close and supportive family. They were very proud when all 4 of their children earned college degrees. Jim and Janet scheduled yearly family trips to Janet's childhood farm in Killarney throughout their entire marriage staying close with her family. In later years, Jim and Janet expanded their travel to include many cruises to Alaska, camping at Mt. Rainier in their trailer and many other destinations.
